A stormy season, or just a passing shower?
Business is not always sunshine and smooth sailing. Some days you feel like you are on a roll—everything is falling into place. Other days? Nothing goes to plan, and it all feels harder than it should.
It is completely normal to feel overwhelmed when things are not flowing. But how do we shift things around? Often, we feel like we have to push through. Head down, keep going.
But what if we paused instead?
What if we took time to rest—looking after our physical and mental health and then gently reassessed what is really going on (or not going on)? Taking time out is not quitting. It is not failing. It is giving yourself space to review the situation and make decisions based on facts, not fear.
Storms in life and business are inevitable. But so are rainbows, if we know where to look.
What do business storms actually look like?
They might be:
- Client delays
- Technology headaches
- Slow sales or cash flow issues
- Feeling flat, unfocused, or burnt out
If any of these sound familiar, please know you are not alone. These seasons are a natural part of running a business. Especially if you are a solopreneur doing all the things.
Why rainbows matter…
Rainbows do not cancel the storm. But they do offer hope, perspective and a glimmer of something better.
Sometimes, those tough moments in business lead to:
- Stronger offers
- Firmer boundaries
- Better systems
- Or a mindset shift that changes everything
Learning to sit with the uncomfortable can open the door to growth.
How do you find the rainbows?
- Gratitude check – What is working right now? Write down as many things as you can – big or small, business or personal.
- Celebrate micro-wins – A kind message, one sale, a task ticked off. They all count.
- Reflect and redirect – What is this challenge trying to teach you? Write down your lessons.
- Connect with others – Chat to your business besties, your coach, or your audience. Surround yourself with people who lift you up.
- Create something small and joyful – A fun Canva post, a helpful tip, or a silly reel just because. Humour can help lighten the mood.
Real examples of silver linings
- A client did not pay their invoice and it led to a decision to change how I invoice. Now payments are made upfront, which helps with cash flow and boundaries.
- A Canva workshop was cancelled due to low ticket sales but it gave me the space to work on other areas of my business. (Like writing this blog post!)
How to be a rainbow in someone else’s storm
- Encourage them – Comment on a post, send a DM or email. Your words might be the thing that gets them through the day.
- Share a tip – Got a shortcut or strategy that helped you? Pass it on.
- Just listen – Sometimes people do not need advice. They just need to be heard and reminded they are not alone.
Be the person you would want beside you in a storm. And remember—what we give out often boomerangs back.
You are stronger than the storm!
Business owners are resilient, resourceful, and wildly creative. We have the skills to turn challenges into opportunities—even if they do not look like it at first.
Keep looking for the rainbows—those little wins, glimmers of hope, moments of clarity. They are there, even if they are hiding behind the clouds.
